The Cup Carnival at Flemington concludes this Saturday with a Group 1 double header, headlined by the VRC Sprint Classic (1200m). Here are my five plays across the meeting.

Bet One- Win- Race Two Number 7 Danon Roman
He’s been a working progress for Anthony Freedman this prep, his first one in Australia, but has been very good. Latest run came over 2000m at Caulfield where he had an epic battle with Lucky For All but that horse just got the win.

Confident he can turn the tables. Think the market gap between he and Lucky For All is too much.

Bet Two- Each Way- Race Four Number 1 Widgee Turf
He’s just so reliable this horse. his bloke has been an absolute beauty for the Patrick Payne team and it’s hard to get away from him. Ran in the VOBIS Gold Star on Manikato night where he ran a game second to Iconoclasm.

Back to 1400m looks perfect, should get a sweet trip and prove hard to beat. Should get each way odds come race time.

Bet Three- Each Way- Race Six Number 2 Savvy Coup
I think she’s the forgotten horse. Probably a bridge too far last time in the Cox Plate and it wasn’t helped by the fact she pulled her head off.

Star Kiwi back home and a proper Group l horse. Has the Lucia Valentina feel about it. Class to come to the fore. Surprised by the market drift.

Bet Four- Win- Race Seven Number 1 Redzel
Sometimes you just have to go with the obvious, which is clearly here with this champ. To an extent, he was handed the Everest on a platter. But it was a very testing track and he still had to get the job done, which he did in emphatic fashion.

Tick over trial win was outstanding and he is a beast when racing down the straight, as we saw last year when winning the race.

Bet Five- Win- Race Eight Number 7 Latrobe
Blair House is too short so I’ll side with the Team Williams runner. Was hot on him for the Melbourne Cup but the stable said he wasn’t ready for the two miles and instead runs here.

He has A1 European form and he’ll be strong at the end of a likely hard 2000m. That, and from all reports, he’s working the house down and Team Williams are beaming with confidence.
