Some solid racing has been set down for Friday, when I think one can atone for a luckless effort at Canterbury. Here are my five plays for the afternoon.

Bet 1: Win – Muswellbrook Race 3, No.3: Brigid Of Kildare
I like her here. Matty Smith trains this well-named mare, who debuted on a bog at Kembla a tick under two weeks ago when she was three and four wide throughout before coming to the outside fence in the straight. She took a while to get going but was good late and would probably have won in another couple of strides. She appeals at this level.

Bet: $40 win at $2.50 (BetEasy)

Bet 2: Each-way – Canberra Race 6, No.1: Balonne
He’s going well, but it’s hard to get a real guide on him because he hasn’t had a clear run in pretty much every start he’s had this prep. He’s had total nightmares on a couple of occasions when seemingly having something to offer. If the breaks go his way and he gets clear air, I’m happy to find out what’s under the hood.

Bet: $20 each-way (Tote)

Bet 3: Each-way – Canberra Race 7, No.7: Seeblume
Seeblume is a Joseph Ible-trained mare who comes through the Tristan de Angel highway from a few weeks back when she looked a bit big in condition given it was her first run in seven weeks. That’s how she raced, with her condition just giving way late. Fitter and up to 1400 metres, she appeals for sure.

Bet: $20 each-way (Tote)

Bet 4: Win – Canterbury Race 5, No.6: Waruna
Waruna clearly looks the one. This mare was heavily backed when racing over 1550 metres at Canterbury a couple of Friday nights ago and really should have won– she just had no luck at a time when the jockey was looking to get clear air and build the revs. I hope he lets the mare roll along on speed in the clear. If that happens, she’ll win.

Bet: $200 win at $2.30 (BetEasy)

Bet 5: Win – Port Lincoln Race 3, No.1: Neva Doubt Us
Des Courtney seems to have worked this horse out in that he seems to race best three weeks or so between runs. He ran over the 1390 metres here last time, when he sat last in the run before peeling wide, rounding them up and winning impressively. He’ll be better suited up in trip, and he’s clearly the horse to beat with upside.

Bet: $40 win at $2.60 (BetEasy)
