There are just two meetings set down for Tuesday, but I like the look of a first starter at Hamilton. These are my five plays for the afternoon.

Bet 1: Win – Scone Race 1, No.4: Lonely Orphan
This will be survival of the fittest and I’m hoping she can come to the fore at the end. She ran over two miles at Grafton last time, where it looked a really good race for her and she proved far too good under Leah Kilner. She’s got the miles in the legs and now she has that winning feeling again – hopefully she can go right on with it.

Bet: $30 win at $3.50 (Sportsbet)

Bet 2: Each-way – Scone Race 2, No.1: Rosaria Caterina
She looks the overs here. Brett Cavanough trains this mare, who resumed over 1200 metres at Newcastle, where she was heavily backed but didn’t have the greatest amount of luck in the straight when third to Fille Volante in a race which has already been a good form reference. On her home track with the run under the belt she certainly appeals at the odds.

Bet: $15 win at $6, $25 place at $2 (BetEasy)

Bet 3: Each-way – Scone Race 3, No.4: Free Rider
He’s a solid each-way gamble. Paul Messara trains this gelding, who is having his first start off the back of two trials, the latest coming here over 900 metres when back and working home well late under riding. A bit of headgear goes on for the debut, and this isn’t a strong maiden. He won’t have to be a star to beat these.

Bet: $15 each-way at $8 to win, $2.70 to place (BetEasy)

Bet 4: Win – Hamilton Race 2, No.12: Heading North
I was hoping they’d miss her, but they haven’t. Mitch Freedman trains this filly, who is on debut and looks a sharp prospect. She jumped out at Ballarat on 13 November, when she showed speed to be near the pace in the jump out and went about her business under a good hold. This isn’t a strong maiden and I think she’s the one to beat on potential.

Bet: $100 win at $3.40 (UBET)

Bet 5: Win – Hamilton Race 3, No.1: Coronel
I think odds of $2.90 are more than acceptable. He should be near odds-on. He resumed at Kyneton in what looked a decent maiden, where he got a mile back off the pace but finished with real purpose late to run second to Kobe Princess. He’s got a clean jump here, and he’s got the ability and form on the board to take care of the others.

Bet: $50 win at $2.90 (BetEasy)
