Alex Brosque: the player whose blood is sky blue.
The man that Sydney FC have relied on so much over the 11 years across two spells he’s been at the club. He will do anything for Sydney FC. So, what will happen when he leaves?
He may not be the most technically gifted footballer or the best in the team, but he comes out on big games, and at 35 he’s still pressing harder than any player on Sydney FC, still scoring goals and most importantly: still captaining, still making speeches and still being there when Sydney FC need him.
Alex Brosque is known for taking rivalries to the extreme, and the Sydney derbies are an example of that. He has stated time and time again that it’s not just on the field where they hate each other.
When asked before the first round of the 2016-2017 when they were to play against Western Sydney Wanderers, he was asked about the rivalry with Sydney against Western Sydney, and he responded with: “I’ve told the boys previously in games: we hate every single one of them, and that’s the way it should be”.
Later in a documentary when asked about that interview he said, “I spoke from the heart”. That is a true example of how Brosque feels about Sydney FC and how he fits into their values.
In the pre-season FFA cup games when Trent Buhagiar was starting instead of Brosque they were looking better than ever, but towards the end of games they started looking tired and weren’t playing their best. It was then Brosque who energetically came on and bullied the defenders, pressed hard and made as many chances as he could.
Even though he may have not made a contribution through the scoresheet, he came up and became a leader when Sydney needed it most. Even in the FFA cup semi-final, when Sydney were thrashing the Wanderers, after the second goal for the four minutes they had before Brosque came on, they looked cruisy and not as interested in the game anymore.
When Brosque came on he re-instated their focus, and in a way getting that yellow card in the seventy-third minute was a good thing, as it showed that the game wasn’t over yet and they still had a lot to do in the last part of the game.
That will be a quality that Sydney will really miss. Like I said earlier, he is a player who will do anything that it takes to help Sydney, and there won’t be a player like that for Sydney for years to come. He is truly irreplaceable.
