Chris Ikonomidis has continued his golden run to help lift Perth Glory to a dominant 3-0 win over Wellington Phoenix in their A-League clash at HBF Park.
Anyone can contribute to The Roar and have their work featured alongside some of Australia’s most prominent sports journalists.
A fast striker is often described as ‘having pace to burn’.
At a sun-drenched Jubilee Oval on Saturday, Roy Krishna could have been flambed, broiled and fried, and he would still barely a break a sweat as he cruised pass Sydney’s sorry excuse for a defence.
Before doffing a top hat and patting Andy Redmayne on the head as he nonchalantly taps the ball home. Kidding, but he could have done it, such was the time and space he was afforded.
Pace in and of itself is next to useless. Just as Gabriel Obertan, a black and white lightning bolt last seen breaking the sound barrier at St James’.
So quick in fact, that he evaded the scouts of Europe’s elite and wound up in the wilderness of the Bulgaria’s Division A. Leviski Sofia, anyone?
So what did Wellington get right? Lets take a look at the keys to their shock triumph
Roy Krishna up top
Krishna hasn’t always convinced in the striker’s role, but his performance on the night rivalled the best marksmen of the league. Received Mandi Sosa’s delightful through ball with consummate ease.
Oh, and the finishing was not to be sniffed at too. Looks to have the advanced forward role nailed down.
Mandi Sosa in a deeper role
The former Real Madrid B man demonstrated wonderful technique, twice taking out Sydney’s entire defensive line with a cultured swish of the foot.
Brilliant vision and impeccable technique to match. It was the kind of pass that compelled you to stand and applaud. Oh, and kudos for Mark Rudan for setting up the play during training.
Steve Taylor and Andrew Durante
How good was Phoenix’s defence today? The duo, with a combined age of 78, turned back the clock and turned in a fantastic defensive effort on the night. Calm and composed, they broke up several dangerous Sydney attempts.
So thats it for my analysis. What did you think of the match? Let us know in the comments below.
