Before you judge this opinion you have to understand where it’s coming from.
I’m a St George fan and watched Anthony Mundine for his entire career with the Dragons. I watched the 1999 grand final when the Melbourne Storm beat us, though Anthony ‘Choc’ Mundine played brilliantly. He talked rubbish in his rugby league, but his ability couldn’t be questioned.
When he went to boxing I knew he would be great. Not only was he an athlete, but he’s a showman. While people doubt his ability, you have to defer to people who actually know. Take for example Sven Ottke.
Ottke was asked eight questions as to who was the best he ever faced in the boxing ring. Not only did he name Mundine four times in the first seven questions but also named him the best opponent overall. That is some serious creditably.
I’ve only met Choc once in person. I was at the Armidale airport in NSW and Anthony Mundine happened to be walking past. (This was after his league career and his Ottke fight.)
I saw him walking towards me and all I said was ‘Hi, how are you going?’ Not only did Mundine acknowledge me, but he also slowed down and asked how I was. The humility he showed in that moment was amazing.
Mundine’s persona since his boxing days has been as the bad guy, however, his peers rate him highly.
However, if Mundine-Horn 2 happens, it does not help Choc.
My advice to Anthony Mundine would be, if you need the money then go for it as you’ve earned the payday. However, if it’s for respect, it won’t change a thing. The people who see beyond the entertainment and see skill know that you’ve already earned it.
