For many people, the beginning of a new year represents a fresh start with goals and wishes in place that we wish to see happen.
The same can be said for AFL clubs as they all aim for the greatest success at the end of every season.
As it stands, all clubs are just wishing for things to happen with the beginning of the season still a while away.
Here is a look at what each club may be wishing for.
Adelaide: Forgetting the demons of 2018
Just about everything went wrong for Don Pyke’s side in 2018 as injuries cruelled the Crows season as they missed out on the top eight. The pre-season training camp became a running story but if they put that behind them there is no reason they can’t content at the pointy end of the season.
Brisbane: Young keys become elite
It has well and truly been documented the potential Harris Andrews and Eric Hipwood both possess. Andrews is already regarded as one of the better key defenders in the game and if he and Hipwood can take a massive step towards the elite category, the Lions could push for a finals spot.
Carlton: Stars avoid injury
Sam Docherty has already been ruled out for a successive straight season with a knee injury and Blues fans will be hoping that’s it in terms of serious injuries. If the Blues are to begin working their way up the ladder, they will need the likes of Mitch McGovern and Patrick Cripps on the field.
Collingwood: Jamie Elliott leaps back to his best
Elliott battled a host of injuries during the 2018 season, which saw him fail to make an appearance at the top level. If he can get his body right, at full flight the 26-year-old is one of the game’s most damaging small forwards who will make any defender nervous.

Essendon: Big Joe returns to full fitness
Following the Round 8 loss to Carlton, Essendon decided to put Joe Daniher on ice for the remainder of the season. When the Bombers began to play better footy many wondered how much better they could have been with Daniher in the side. If he is right to go from the beginning, and John Worsfold’s side bring that same brand of footy anything could be possible.
Fremantle: Twin towers become potent
For years it has felt like the Dockers, have been crying out for a key forward but now they have to exceptional talents in Jesse Hogan and Rory Lobb. Both players have shown the ability to take the game by the scruff of the neck and could easily do so in their new colours. Their partnership looks set to be an interesting one.
Geelong: Development, development, development
We know all about the Cats’ stars, but it has been their bottom half which has let them down in the past. Now is the time for the younger brigade from the Cattery to step up and meet their challenges head on. If they do, Geelong may not fall as far as some people have predicted.
Gold Coast: The reset goes to plan
Heading into 2019, it feels like the Suns are starting things all over once again – but this time they are hoping it all comes together. With numerous fresh faces entering the club, people believe it will be a difficult time next year for the Suns. As a neutral, we just hope they are at least competitive.
GWS: Injuries become a thing of the past
By now many predicted the Giants would have began a premiership dynasty, to this point that certainly hasn’t been the case. Injuries cruelled Leon Cameron’s sides chances in 2018, but with more key players departing the club is their window beginning to shut?
