The ACT Brumbies have today announced a two-year contract extension for head coach Dan McKellar, rewarding the coach for a strong debut season in 2018.

With his contract set to expire at the end of the season, the club moved quickly to lock the 42-year-old in until at least the 2021 season.

Brumbies CEO Phil Thomson said the deal was a “credit to his leadership”.

“I have been very impressed with the quality of the overall rugby program that has been developed and implemented by Dan and his staff.

“His attention to detail and subtle changes that he has made on the back of learnings from 2018 has created, what I believe, to be a first-class rugby program,” he added.

McKellar said he was grateful for the extension in a press release.

“Obviously from a personal standpoint, I’m very grateful,” he said.

“You never take these opportunities for granted to work in professional sport and for a club like the Brumbies, it’s something I’m very proud of.

“I think it’s a vote of confidence, not just in myself but in the program in general, the assistant coaches and the high-performance staff.

“It’s a sign that Phil Thomson and the board are happy with the direction the team is heading,” he added.

McKellar took over from Stephen Larkham at the beginning of last season after Larkham was appointed assistant Wallabies coach. While the Brumbies weren’t able to make the finals in his first season in charge, they won more games than the previous season and are considered a dark horse for this season’s finals.

The Queensland native previously coached the Canberra Vikings in the NRC and the Tuggeranong Vikings in the two years prior.

He played his entire career at Souths in Queensland Premier Rugby, and was also their head coach for three years after retiring.

The Canberra-based club kick their Super Rugby season off tomorrow night at home against the Melbourne Rebels.
