Nick Kyrgios has toughed out a three-set victory over fellow Australian John Millman in the first round of the ATP Tour’s Delray Beach Open in Florida.

The unseeded Kyrgios overcame the fifth-seeded Millman 6-4 6-7 (1-7) 7-6 (7-3) in the two hour and four minute encounter.

World No.64 Kyrgios fired down 19 aces but threw in 11 double faults as he fended off the lone break point chance on his serve.

He took advantage of his only chance to break Millman’s serve, in the first set.

Kyrgios, who was intent on keeping the points short in his opening round, will face Romanian Radu Albot or Croatian veteran Ivo Karlovic in the round of 16.

Bernard Tomic and Jordan Thompson will commence their campaigns in Florida against No.6 seed Andreas Seppi and Spaniard Marcel Granollers respectively on Tuesday.

In other opening round action on Monday, Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin overcame Spaniard Feliano Lopez 7-6 (7-5) 6-2 in a battle of the 30 somethings, Lukas Lacko defeated Yosuke Watanuki 6-4 6-4 and South African wildcard Lloyd Harris beat qualifier Darian King 7-6 (7-1) 6-3.
