Rife speculation about the future of Ethan Lowe has finally come to a head, with the North Queensland Cowboys today announcing they’d granted the wantaway forward an immediate release from his contract to join South Sydney.

The 108-gamer today finalised his move to the Rabbitohs, with his former club declaring “it was in everyone’s best interest” to make the move now. Lowe bolsters South Sydney’s forward stocks, while also adding a reliable backup goalkicking option too.

“We are disappointed to see Ethan go,” said Cowboys director of football, Peter Parr.

“Ethan has been a wonderful player for our club … Everyone at our club would like to thank Ethan for his contribution and time in Cowboys colours and wish him all the best for the future,” he added.

Souths general manager Shane Richardson said the addition of Lowe “will create more competition for spots” in the side.

“He will have an opportunity to put his best foot forward under Wayne [Bennett] here at Souths and we’re all looking forward to seeing what he can achieve in red and green,” he said.

Rumours of Lowe’s departure actually started last season, with stints in the Queensland Cup seemingly putting the 27-year-old on the outer at the Townsville club. The second-rower appeared to have sorted his future after signing a one-year deal in October to stay with the club this season, but speculation about a departure never really subsided.

The Goondiwindi native made his debut for the Cowboys in 2013, after originally playing for the Sydney Roosters U20 side. He went on to play an instrumental role in the club’s inaugural premiership victory in 2015, as well as their World Club Challenge triumph the next year.
