I like the idea of a top-ten NRL finals system

In recent news, the NRL are looking at a new finals system – a top ten as opposed to a top eight.

The top six get a week to rest, seventh will host tenth and eighth host ninth.

It’s similar to the NFL playoffs format. With 32 teams, each are split into two conferences, AFC and NFC, which contain 16 each and those 16 each are split into four pool groups of four.

The top two from each conference get a week off, with third taking on sixth and fourth hosting fifth – the latter two being the wildcards.

Originally I didn’t like the idea, but I’ve come around to it. This is something new to the NRL and sometimes we’ve seen the teams that finished in places seventh through tenth all on similar points, separated by differential – 2014 is an example:

7. Canterbury – 30 points (+7)
8. Brisbane – 28 points (+93)
9. Warriors – 28 points (+80)
10. Parramatta – 28 points (-103)

Part of me thinks the NRL should have given it a trial run this year and leave it up to the fans to decide whether or not to pursue it, but a new system may work.

If your team came ninth or tenth under this system, your grand final chances would hang by a thread, but it’s a chance nonetheless.

We could even potentially see a ninth vs tenth grand final one day and the idea of that is rather freaky.

So Roarers, what do you think? Are you for it or against it?
