Liverpool have qualified for the quarter-finals of the Champions League with a 3-1 win at Bayern Munich while Barcelona blasted Lyon 5-1 at home to progress.

Sadio Mane has scored twice as Liverpool won 3-1 at Bayern Munich to reach the Champions League quarter-finals while Barcelona’s Lionel Messi grabbed a double in a 5-1 romp over Lyon that sent the Catalans into the last eight.

Both round of 16 first legs ended goaless but Liverpool and Barcelona earned their passage to the next round with comfortable victories.

In Munich, Mane pounced on a needless charge out of his goal by Manuel Neuer in his 100th Champions League appearance, to wrong-foot the Bayern keeper with a superb turn before he chipped his finish into the net to open the scoring in the 26th minute.

Joel Matip’s own goal levelled the score on 39 minutes but Virgil Van Dijk’s towering 69th-minute header sent Liverpool back ahead with Mane adding another late on to seal proceedings.

Barcelona went ahead at the Nou Camp through Lionel Messi’s panenka penalty on 18 minutes while Philippe Coutinho tapped home the second in the 31st after good work by Luis Suarez.

Lyon pulled one back through Lucas Tousart on 58 minutes to but further strikes from the electric Messi, Gerard Pique and substitute Ousmane Dembele wrapped the game up for the Catalans.

Four English teams are into the quarter-finals for the first time in a decade with the draw to take place on Friday.
