It might not be race day, but qualifying for the 2019 Formula 1 season opener will be incredibly important as the world’s best get things going at Albert Park. This is The Roar’s guide to streaming the qualifying session online, or watching it on TV.

Qualifying will set the grid for the race on Sunday, and gets underway at 5pm (AEDT) on Saturday, March 16.

It’s scheduled to run for an hour across three sessions at Albert Park, and rather than being a number of laps, will simply record the fastest times for drivers within the confines of the session.

How to watch qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix on TV

There will be two ways to watch qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix on TV.

Fox Sports, who have the rights to the entire season, will broadcast qualifying and all the support categories on Saturday on Fox Sports 506.

To watch the coverage, you will need to have a valid Foxtel TV subscription, complete with the sports package.

The other method to tune in on TV is through Channel Ten.

How to live stream qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix online

If you are looking to live stream the qualifying session, you will be looking to use the Fox Sports coverage through one of three different methods.

The best of those is a new streaming service, known as Kayo Sports. For just $25 per month, they have the rights to all of Foxtel’s sports channels, and other selected events.

The other methods to tune in are through Foxtel’s dedicated streaming services, the Foxtel App or Foxtel Now.

How does qualifying work?

Qualifying is pretty straightforward to understand in Formula 1, and is run under a knockout system across the three sessions, which get gradually shorter.

In the first session, the entire field have 20 minutes to post a lap time. The seven bottom-ranked cars will then be eliminated and placed onto the grid.

Lap times are reset for Session 2, with the top 15 then having a chance to go around again.

At the end of that session, only the top ten will survive, with 15-11 placed onto the grid. The top ten then have just ten minutes to get a good lap time set as they fight for pole position.
