Liverpool legend and former A-League marquee Robbie Fowler will take over as head coach of the Brisbane Roar at the conclusion of the 2018/19 A-League season, but is it the right move for either party?

The football world in Australia appears to be at least partly divided on whether the former Premier League star is an appropriate choice given a brief stint as player-coach of Thai club Muangthong United forms the majority of his senior coaching experience.

Roar football Expert Mike Tuckerman joined us on the Game of Codes podcast to tell us why Fowler is a sensible choice for the club and to discuss what expectations should be placed on the Roar for the 2019/20 season.

Listen to the discussion:

Speaking to the media, Fowler was quick to deflect any suggestion he is ill-prepared to take on the two-year coaching deal, which will see him manage the club until the end of the 2020/21 season at a minimum.

“I get what the critics are trying to get at, but I don’t agree with it,” he told The Australian.

“I have worked really hard, so let’s quash all that inexperienced talk. I have been in football a long time. Just because I am inexperienced doesn’t mean I am going to do a bad job.

“You could have Pep Guardiola at Brisbane Roar but that doesn’t mean he is going to be a great manager.

“I have done all the right things to ensure I make a good fist of it. I have got all the required badges. I am a pro-licence holder (UEFA) and there’s not many of them in Australia.”

Interim coach Darren Davies will take up duties as an assistant coach at Brisbane, with a second to be appointed by Fowler.
