Wayne Rooney has described his collision with New England Revolution keeper Matt Turner “like being in a car crash” after the DC United striker was absolutely flattened early in the second half challenging for the ball.

With scores locked at nil-all, Rooney gave chase to a long through ball at the same time Turner rushed out to clear the pill.

Unfortunately for both men, Turner leapt straight into the chest and head of Rooney, absolutely nailing the former Premier League legend and earning himself a straight red card. Thankfully Rooney was quick to return to his feet, and held no ill-will towards the reckless impact.

“It was like being in a car crash, it’s a misjudgment by the goalkeeper,” Rooney said after the game.

“The referee got the decision right. But these things happen, he meant no harm, he just misjudged it.”

Rooney wasn’t able to score from the ensuing free kick, but did sink an injury-time spot kick to steal a one-all draw.
