The Brumbies have today confirmed rumours surrounding flanker David Pocock’s future, with the club announcing he’ll retire from Super Rugby at the conclusion of the season.
However, with the Wallabies regular sidelined indefinitely due to a calf strain, there is an outside chance he may have played his last game for the club already.
He will continue to play for the Panasonic Wild Knights in Japan’s Top League and, while he won’t be contracted to Rugby Australia, will still be eligible for Wallabies selection under the 60-cap rule.
The 31-year-old said in a statement that he was grateful for the support of Brumbies fans since his switch from the Western Force in 2013. “Over the last seven years Canberra has well and truly become my home. Em [Emma Palandri, wife] and I love living here and being part of the community.”
“The Brumbies have given me a home for the last seven years. They’ve supported me through injury and given me the opportunity to work on my game and my leadership as part of an incredible group of men,” he added.
“After 13 years of professional rugby, I’m looking forward to the challenges the rest of this year holds and also thinking about what comes next.”
Pocock debuted for the Western Force in 2006 and played seven seasons with the then-expansion club, before crossing the country to join the Brumbies for the 2013 season and beyond.
He made his debut for the Wallabies against the All Blacks in a 2008 Test in Hong Kong, going on to represent Australia for a total of 55 occasions.
