West Indian opening batsman Chris Gayle had a roller coaster ride against Australia before his luck eventually ran out.
After successfully overturning the umpire’s initial decisions on two occasions, including one that hit the stumps at 143km/h without toppling the bails, Gayle was finally given marching orders for an LBW off a beautiful Mitchell Starc delivery.
The DRS ruling was ‘umpire’s call’ and gifted Starc the first scalp of his 5/46. But the wicket’s shine quickly rubbed off two overs later when commentator Michael Slater spotted a significant issue with Starc’s preceding delivery – it was a BLATANT no ball.
Somehow the umpire failed to spot Starc’s leading foot hanging two shoes past the crease, depriving Gayle of a free hit.
“I saw it on the screen in the dressing room and I just laughed… I couldn’t believe it,” said West Indies captain, Jason Holder, during the post-match press conference.
When asked earlier about the standard of officiating during the match, Holder tried hard to bite his tongue.
“I just found ourselves a bit unlucky to be on the other end at all the decisions… I guess, honest mistakes from the umpires.”
