After four years of waiting the Matildas finally have another crack at a World Cup, and their campaign begins with a match against Italy on Sunday night (AEST).

Planning to watch the match? Well, the first step towards that goal is – of course – knowing what time it’s on! Especially if you’re an Australian viewer trying to figure out the time zones. So, don’t worry: we’ve taken care of that for you.

Basically it’s this: the match will be on the night of Sunday, June 9. But exactly what time will depend on where in the country you are.

If you’re watching from New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Tasmania or the ACT, then you’re in the AEST time zone, and the match will start for you at 9pm.

If you’re watching from South Australia or the Northern Territory, then you’re in the ACST time zone and the match will start at 8:30pm.

If you’re watching from Western Australia then you’re in the AWST time zone and the match will start at 7pm.

The Aussies find themselves in a group with Brazil, Jamaica, and their opponents tonight, Italy.

Of that quartet it’s our Matildas and the Brazilians who are widely favoured to win their way through to the knockout stage, but Italy will consider themselves a sneaky chance – especially given that the top four third-place finishers will make it in.

A win in this match would set the Matildas up well to make it through to the knockout stage but also shapes as a chance to get some confidence and build momentum for the rest of the tournament.

“We feel good about it,” said Alanna Kennedy.

“There’s definitely some times where we could drop our line earlier depending on the opposition and the time on the ball.

“But it’s a good change that we’ve had recently and we’ve found a lot of success in it.

“Unfortunately, in the last couple of games we’ve lost a few goals which doesn’t look good on paper, but as a team we’re not concerned about that at all.”
