The 2019 State of Origin series heads out west to Perth for Game 2, with the New South Wales Blues hoping to avoid series defeat against the Queensland Maroons. Here is all the weather information relevant to the historic first encounter in WA.

Game 2 is set to kick-off at 7:50pm (AEST) on Sunday, June 23. Unfortunately, the Perth forecast looks shocking, with extremely high chance of rain and a possible thunderstorm during the game.

The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting a 95 per cent chance of rain falling in the Western capital on Origin day and, unfortunately, it’s most likely to fall in the afternoon or evening. That means that, even if rain doesn’t fall during the match, the ground will still likely be heavily affected – especially as very heavy rain is expected to fall the previous day.

This is likely to create slippery conditions, although it could help to soften a surface which has received complaint from AFL teams for being too hard.

That said, the obvious danger is a lightning storm during the game. Optus Stadium provides fans with adequate cover in wet weather, but the ground is not protected by a roof at all.

Temperatures should be okay for football, with a top of 20 predicted throughout the day and a low of 11. Temperatures during the game should be around 13 degrees.

Perth will receive some moderate northwesterly breezes throughout the afternoon – up to 35km/h, but this should largely subside during the game itself.

In tough, wet, greasy conditions, expect a physical slog for most of the match as both sides try to keep it simple with the ball in hand. Both coaches will need to manage their forwards and interchange well.
