Wanderers coach says sorry for media no-show as his side puts the drama behind them to overcome Perth
The Wanderers coach admits he has stuff going on in his personal life, and insists he has full support of playing group.
With Jason Davidson swanning off to Korea and Perth laughing all the way to the bank, the purple troops now have a fullback-shaped hole in their back line.
The candidate in question needs to have bagfuls of stamina, as they would not have the luxury of a winger tracking back. He would, essentially, be solely responsible for the team’s play on the left flank, both in attack and defence.
Let’s take a look at three players who fit that bill.
Alex Gersbach
Once a Sydney FC golden boy, the skilful fullback’s career has hit a snag in recent years.
Relegated with Belgian club NAC Breda in the season just past, he is on the look-out for a new club, and Tony Popovic’s men could just fit the bill.
As Chris Ikonomidis proved, an A-League return can be an ample shop window for European clubs. Furthermore, Gersbach is likely to be available on a free transfer, making him an ideal replacement.
2. Scott Jamieson
The fiery fullback might be short in stature, but he more than makes up for it with his passion and excellent technique.
With Scott Galloway likely to be the No.1 left back at Melbourne City in the 2019/20 season, could Jamieson join Popovic’s men for more game time?
3. Leigh Broxham
The Victory utility man is often unfairly perceived as a jack of all trades, with the snide, insulting implication that he is a master of none.
That could not be further from the truth.
However, although the Victory player-of-the-year provides excellent defensive steel and nous wherever he plays, his lack of offensive threat going forward counts against him.
So here are the three possible replacements for the Korean-bound Davidson.
What do you think of them? Are they a good fit? Are there current or former A-Leagues players who could do a better job?
