It feels like the Super Rugby season only just wrapped up, but the Rugby Championship is already here!

The truncated version of the annual tournament gets underway this weekend for Australia, with the Wallabies out to erase a horror run in Johannesburg as they take on South Africa.

The Aussies haven’t saluted in Joburg since way back in 1963. By the time the teams take the field, it will have been 20,420 days between drinks.

But, with the Springboks resting a number of players for this match and Australia having significantly longer than normal to prepare for the South African conditions, is this our best chance to steal a rare away win?

We were joined on the Game of Codes podcast by Roar rugby expert Geoff Parkes to analyse just what chance Michael Cheika’s men have of getting their Rugby Championship campaign off to the right start.

Listen to the discussion:

This year’s Rugby Championship is shortened due to the Rugby World Cup kicking off in September. Sides will play just four matches, instead of six, meaning the title could be out of our grasp with just one loss.

The Wallabies have a little bit of history on their side, though. The last time the Rugby Championship was played in a World Cup year? They won!
