Finals fever will soon sweep up the AFL, with eight clubs just about ready to make their final preparations ahead of what they hope will be a successful September campaign.

It’s no doubt an exciting time for fans, but what about for the players?

We had a great opportunity to speak with AFL premiership defender Ted Richards to give us a player’s insight into what this time of year is like at AFL clubs and how the mood changes when finals rolls around.

Listen to the discussion:

Richards touched on the classic ‘one game at a time’ cliche and how good players really are at abiding by that ethos.

We also talked about just how important home finals are, what it was like for long time adversary Lance Franklin to cross to the club as well as an amusing anecdote none of us were expecting about the hassle of securing finals tickets as a player.

Richards was an All-Australian in 2012, before retiring in 2016. He now hosts his own podcast, The Richards Report, while working with asset management firm Six Park.
