It was Mad Monday for ten of the AFL’s 18 clubs this past Monday, with the season ending for more than half of the competition.

Nobody is ever satisfied by a non-appearance in September and, no matter where in a rebuild they may be, every club will be trying their best to get themselves back to the finals in 2020.

But, as well know, not every club is in the same spot. Which teams are best poised to launch themselves back into finals football next season?

We got Roar AFL expert and editor Josh Elliott on the Game of Codes podcast to ponder what might have been at Headingley.

Listen to the discussion:

Hawthorn, Port Adelaide, Adelaide all narrowly missed out on a spot, are either of them capable of taking the next step in 2019? Will a new coach and a potentially active trade period help Fremantle get back into the eight?

There are plenty of eyes on teams in the bottom four too, with Carlton’s strong finish to the year, Melbourne’s incredible 2018 season and Sydney’s legacy since 2000 making them all sides to watch next season too.
