VFL Grand Final match results: Richmond bring home the cup in dramatic struggle with Williamstown

The Richmond Tigers have clung on to win a tense VFL Grand Final over the Williamstown Seagulls by just three points at Ikon Park in Carlton.

In the first term the Tigers took control immediately. They left their opponents goalless by the siren, recording four goals for the term with a solid opener from Marlon Pickett.

In the second half it was Richmond who were left goalless as the Seagulls surged into the second half with two goals and four behinds.

Both teams recorded a goal each in the third as the Seagulls struggled to make good on their opportunities, adding four more behinds to their list.

The final quarter ended in absolute scenes with Willie Wheeler missing two late chances to snare the lead back as the Tigers fought valiantly to withstand the Williamstown resurgence.

For the term, the Tigers kicked three goals while the Seagulls recorded four with five behinds.

Mid-season selection Marlon Pickett was the Grand Final’s MVP, recording 20 disposals, one goal, three marks and nine tackles.

Riley Collier-Dawkins also impressed with two goals, 15 disposals, four marks and six tackles, with Jacob Townsend having two goals of his own with 11 disposals and seven tackles.

For Williamstown, Mitchell Hibberd starred with 24 disposals, three marks and four tackles, while Jack Dorgan (21 disposals) and Willie Wheeler (19 disposals, one goal, five marks and eight tackles.

This brings the VFL season to a close with the Richmond AFL side looking forward to the AFL Grand Final next week.
