The NRL’s grand finalists are set, with the South Sydney Rabbitohs and Melbourne Storm missing the cut for 2019.

While there’s little doubt that Craig Bellamy’s side will be thereabouts at the business end of the season in 2020 – what about the Bunnies?

Did Souths do enough in the first half of 2019 to prove they’re still in the premiership conversation going forward? Or did the cracks that appeared over the second half of the season spell doom for them going forward?

We got Roar rugby league expert AJ Mithen on the Game of Codes podcast to examine where Souths fell short in 2019 and make a call on whether they can get back to the summit in 2020.

After blistering out to a 10-1 start, the representative period derailed the club in 2019. Adam Reynolds got injured immediately prior, while Cody Walker and Damien Cook weren’t the same players after their Origin efforts.

With Tom Burgess off to Wigan and John Sutton retiring, there’ll be a fair bit of experience missing from the Rabbitohs’ lineup. Of course, it’s easy to forget they unexpectedly lost Greg Inglis to retirement earlier this season.
