Australian No.1 Alex de Minaur has booked his place in the second round of the Paris Masters with a straight sets win over Serbian Laslo Djere.
De Minaur, who rose to world No.18 after his impressive run to the final of the ATP 500 event in Basel at the weekend where he lost to Roger Federer, beat Djere 6-1 6-4 and will next play Spain’s Roberto Bautista-Agut.
It was the Sydneysider’s 33rd win for the season.
Elsewhere on Tuesday, fourth seed Daniil Medvedev suffered a shock defeat while defending champion Karen Khachanov was dethroned by Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff 7-6 (7-5) 3-6 7-5.
On a bad day for Russians in Paris, Medvedev lost for the first time since the US Open final, going down 4-6 6-2 6-4 to home favourite Jeremy Chardy.
He was on a nine-match winning run taking in St Petersburg and Shanghai where he took his tally of titles this season to four but he came up against an inspired opponent.
After reaching six successive finals, he looked in control when he took the first set but ultimately paid for failing to convert 14 of the 15 break points he carved out.
Chardy even saved one as he served for the match in the decider, going on to reach the third round at the Paris event for the first time at the 10th attempt.
He will now face Chile’s Cristian Garin or 2016 finalist John Isner.
Khachanov was edged out in a first-set tie-break but battled back to win the first three games of the second.
Struff, 29, broke serve first in the deciding frame to lead 3-1 but Khachanov again came back to level 3-3.
The world No.8, who beat Novak Djokovic to the 2018 Paris title, served for a sudden death tie-break at 6-5 but made a forehand error to give Struff a match point and he duly converted.
Alexander Zverev, who won last season’s ATP Finals and is gunning for one of the remaining slots for this year’s event with a strong showing in Paris, needed less than an hour to beat Spain’s Fernando Verdasco 6-1 6-3.
French lucky loser Corentin Moutet will play top-seeded Djokovic in the second phase after overcoming the world No.1’s fellow Serb Dusan Lajovic 6-4 1-6 6-3.
Taylor Fritz bested compatriot Frances Tiafoe 7-6 (8-6) 3-6 6-4.
