Rostropovich finished last in the 2019 Melbourne Cup, and it has now emerged that the horse has been rushed to veterinary hospital after suffering a serious injury in the race.
In quite what was quite a slow race, Australian runner Vow And Declare finished first in a thrilling race, ahead of a handful of horses which could only be separated by a photo finish.

But at the other end of the field it was Rostropovich last past the post. The Hayes and Dabernig-trained gelding was pulled up with around 350 metres to go in the race. The five-year-old was taken to Werribee equine clinic to receive treatment for a cracked pelvis.
Thankfully, though, the prognosis for Rostropovich is positive and he is expected to make a full recovery.
