Perth Scorchers paceman AJ Tye won’t be available to bowl for the next three to four months after undergoing elbow surgery.

Star Perth Scorchers paceman Andrew Tye won’t be able to bowl a single ball during the 2019-20 BBL season due to a serious elbow injury.

Tye ruptured the medial ligament in his right elbow while throwing during an Australian T20 training session last month.

The 32-year-old underwent an elbow reconstruction in Sydney a fortnight ago, and WACA Sports Science Sports Medicine Manager Nick Jones says Tye will be unavailable as a bowler for three to four months.

The BBL season begins for the Scorchers on December 18 and their final home-and-away fixture is on January 26, meaning Tye won’t be able to recover in time to bowl even if the Scorchers make
the finals.

The only unlikely chance for Tye to play is if he is selected as a specialist batsman.

Scorchers coach Adam Voges is still holding out hope that Tye can play in the latter stages of the BBL campaign.

“It’s never nice to lose any player to injury, but someone as experienced and well liked as AJ is a big blow for us,” Voges said.

“I’m confident we have the depth to cover AJ and hopefully fans will see him in action at The Furnace towards the end of the Big Bash.”

The loss of Tye further weakens the Scorchers’ bowling stocks.

Star left-hander Jason Behrendorff has already been ruled out for the summer after undergoing back surgery, while allrounders Nathan Coulter-Nile and Hilton Cartwright have defected to Melbourne Stars.

Skipper Mitch Marsh could miss the start of the BBL after a slower-than-expected recovery from his broken hand.

Marsh broke a bone in his right hand after punching a wall in frustration last month.

Although the fracture has healed, there is still ligament damage that is causing him pain.

No firm timeline has been set on his return.

The Scorchers are the most successful team in BBL history with three titles, but they collected the wooden spoon last season in a horror campaign.
