The Queensland government have confirmed they will bid to host the Olympic Games in 2032.

The bid to bring the Olympics back to Australia for the third time, and the first since Sydney hosted the 2000 Olympics, has been in the pipeline for some years.

The Queensland government have been carrying out feasibility studies on whether the state could host the Games for months, and today confirmed they would be bidding.

It’s understood 80 per cent of the venues needed to host the Games are already in place around the state, with Brisbane having hosted the 1982 Commonwealth Games, and the Gold Coast recently hosting the 2018 version.

Hosts of the Olympics have been harder and harder to find in recent years, amid excess spending and cities left in financial ruin with venues not used after the Games, with both Athens in 2004 and Rio de Janeiro in 2016 being prime examples.

The IOC have already locked in the next three hosts of the Games, with Tokyo to host next year, followed by Paris in 2024 and Los Angeles in 2028. In an unprecedented step, both the Paris and Los Angeles Olympics were confirmed at the same time with no other bidders.

Queensland premier Annastacia Palaszczuk visited IOC president Thomas Bach alongside AOC president John Coates earlier this year to confirm details around bidding for the games, while Scott Morrison’s federal government have already pledged support.

It’s understood Jakarta, Mumbai and Madrid are among the other cities which have expressed interest in the 2032 Games, while Singapore may also bid alongside Jakarta.

The winning bid won’t be selected until at 2021 at the earliest, however, it may not be until 2025 that the hosts of the 2032 Games are decided.
