GWS superstar Lachie Whitfield has nipped one of 2020’s biggest contract sagas in the bud, signing a massive seven-year extension with the club that took him with pick no.1 in the 2012 draft.

The 25-year-old, who made his first All Australian side in 2018, was set to be a big part of Greater Western Sydney’s contract armageddon at the end of 2020, joining Jeremy Cameron, Zac Williams, Jeremy Finalyson, Aidan Corr and Sam Reid as players in need of a new deal.

But the Giants moved to end a potential season full of rumours and speculation, inking their star half-back to a deal that keeps him at the club until 2027.

Whitfield averaged 27 disposals, eight marks and four inside 50s per game in 2019. As well as being All Australian in 2018, Whitfield also won the club best and fairest that season.

The 133-gamer said, in the end, the decision to stay in Sydney was an easy one.

“I’ve known my future is in Sydney for a long time,” he said in the statement.

“I play for success and so being at the Giants is clearly the best option for me.

“As a club we’ve been in four finals in a row now and we’re a hungry group who continually drive each other to be better than the season before.

“This is an outstanding club with outstanding people and I’m excited to be here.”

Stephen Coniglio, Josh Kelly, Toby Greene, Jacob Hopper, Tim Taranto, Nick Haynes, Harry Himmelberg and Sam Taylor have all committed to the club in recent seasons.
