The crucial cogs of AFL's Round 7: Which players need to be the difference makers?
We’re taking a look at one player from each team that needs to make a difference this week, starting with the ANZAC Day games.
One of the biggest out-of-contract names got pulled off the board very early yesterday, with Greater Western Sydney star Lachie Whitfield inking a seven-year deal to remain at the club.
He joins Stephen Coniglio as having signed seven-year deals with the Giants in the last six months, while Toby Greene and Nick Haynes are also locked away for at least five more seasons.
However, it’s not all rosy for the Giants on the contract front, with a host of big stars set to come off contract this season. Jeremy Cameron headlines the list of potential losses at the end of 2020, while Zac Williams, Jeremy Finlayson and Matthew de Boer are also coming off contract. Jacob Hopper joins the list next season.
So, what will the full fallout from Whitfield’s contract be?
We were joined by Roar AFL expert and editor Stirling Coates on the Game of Codes podcast to discuss whether Whitfield warrants the deal he’s received, plus who might get squeezed out of Olympic Park as a result.
