All the action from Round 12 of the 2019-20 A-League season summed up.

Western Sydney Wanderers 3-2 Adelaide United

The Wanderers travelled to Adelaide in the hopes of winning a game for the first time since October, and they got off to the perfect start. Nicolai Mueller headed home the first goal of the game in the 11th minute, giving the visitors a shock lead. United then equalised in the 19th minute, Nikola Mileusnic feeding Alhassan Toure for the easy tap-in.

The Wanderers regained the lead in the second half, Mueller heading home once again after being spotted out by Tarek Elirch in the 58th minute. The away side then looked poised to ending their winless drought when Mohamed Adam scored 77th minute, but United were given life in injury when Toure was taken down inside the box. VAR awarded a penalty and George Blackwood stepped up from the spot.

There was more late drama to come, as VAR awarded United another penalty, Daniel Georgievski pinged for handball. He’d call it an early night by bringing himself off the pitch. Blackwood was unable to repeat his effort from the spot, and the Wanderers held on for an unlikely 3-2 victory.

United hosted the Phoenix for the first A-League match at Mars Stadium in Ballarat in the hopes of coming away with three points to overtake second-placed City on the table, but it was the Phoenix who struck first. Ulises Davila squared up David Ball for the first goal in the 41st minute, and the Phoenix then went 2-0 up through Callum McCowatt, who dribbled cleverly through United’s defence to score his first A-League goal in the 55th minute. Ulises Davila then put the icing on the cake in the 80th minute to put the away side 3-0 up.

Travelling United fans did leave with something to cheer about, with Alessandro Diamanti scoring a penalty in the 89th minute to score a consolation prize. The Phoenix won only their fourth game ever in Victoria.

Newcastle Jets 1-1 Brisbane Roar

Last-placed Jets were looking to turn their fortunes around when they hosted the Roar, and they got off to the perfect start, with Dimitri Petratos scoring the opener in the 32nd minute. The Roar did have most of the play but went into the break 1-0 down.

Brisbane pushed for an equaliser in the second half and finally got the rewards, with Aiden O’Neil setting up Bradden Inman for his first goal of the season to bring his side level late in the game in the 87th minute. Both teams settled for a draw, which does no good for either as they fall further behind the top six.

Sydney FC 2-1 Melbourne City

It was first against second as Sydney FC looked to put further distance between themselves and City on the table. It was City who struck the first blow, Connor Metcalfe heading home Craig Noone’s cross into the box in the 22nd minute, and Sydney were then struck another blow when Rhyan Grant was red-carded for his challenge, the first red card of his career.

Against the tide Sydney FC managing a goal through Adam Le Fondre in the 29th minute. The Sky Blues could’ve taken the lead into the break despite being down to ten men when they were awarded a penalty, but City keeper Thomas Glover up to the challenge making the save.

The game levelled 1-1 at half-time, but a Kosta Barbarouses strike late in the 84th minute gave the hosts a 2-1 win, keeping them atop the table.

Perth picked up from where they left off, with Joel Chianese heading home in the 48th minute.

The game was put to bed into the 62nd minute when Diego Castro capitalised on a defensive error, setting up Bruno Fornaroli for the easy tap-in goal. The Glory’s season back on track with two comfortable back to back wins.
