Perth Scorchers coach Adam Voges says too much was left to too few, as the BBL’s most successful franchise missed out on the finals for a second straight season.
The Scorchers went into the final round of games in fourth spot, but a seven wicket-loss away to Sydney Thunder on Sunday combined with Hobart’s win in Adelaide over the Strikers a few hours later, dumped Perth out of the top five.
With three titles, the WA side is the only team to have won more than one in the eight previous years of the competition.
They missed out on finals for the first time last year when they finished eighth and last.
While they have ended with two more wins than last season, they dropped to sixth after finishing with successive losses and could finish as low as seventh, if Brisbane beat Melbourne Renegades in Monday’s final regular season game.,
Voges, who was awarded an OAM for service to cricket in the Australia Day honours list, reflected on some missed opportunities across the season and an over reliance on half a dozen players.
“There’s a number of moments I guess over a 14-game season where you look back,” Voges said in Sydney before his side’s fate was sealed in Adelaide.
“A run chase in Adelaide, a run chase against the Stars in Melbourne..
“Little bits and pieces, a couple of big moments that we weren’t able to win.
“We probably asked a bit too much of too few this year.
“We had some really high quality performers. I thought, Liam Livingstone (425 runs) Josh Inglis (405) and Mitch Marsh (382) with the bat were outstanding.
“(Spinner) Fawad (Ahmed) (and quicks) Jhye Richardson and Chris Jordan (all with 15 wickets) were brilliant with the ball.
‘But we probably asked a bit too much of those six and probably just needed a few more contributions along the way.
“I thought there was a lot of positive signs.
“We certainly showed I think our best cricket was good enough, we probably just didn’t show it often enough.”
Sunday’s game marked an unhappy debut for the Scorchers latest recruit, veteran South African paceman Morne Morkel, who went for 18 runs in his only over.
