NRL CEO Todd Greenberg has quit his position, effective immediately.

Greenberg had been the subject of intense media scrutiny about his position after a falling out with new ARLC chairman Peter V’landys and the NRL clubs, the CEO, whose contract was due to expire at the end of the year anyway, has made the decision to step away from the position he’s held since 2016 in a move described by the NRL as a mutual agreement.

Greenberg’s decision follows an intense attack on the game’s management from broadcaster Channel Nine a week and a half ago, which has since seen V’landys take the lead in television rights negotiations with Nine and Foxtel.

The Sydney Morning Herald is reporting that a number of other executives are likely to follow in Greenberg’s footsteps.

“It has been my great honour and privilege to be the CEO of the NRL for the last four years,” Greenberg said in a statement today.

“Despite the variety of challenges and pressures I have loved every single minute of the journey. Our growth over the last four years has been extraordinary and I am very proud of my contribution to the game.

“I am indebted to the game for the variety of opportunities and experiences that have been provided to my family and I, and we leave with many great memories and life long friendships.

“My sincere thanks to all the stakeholders across the game, particularly the fans who are the lifeblood of rugby league. Their unwavering passion for the game is wonderful.”

Chief commercial officer Andrew Abdo has stepped in as acting CEO while the NRL searches for a replacement.

Greenberg was hired as CEO in 2016, a widely expected move following a three-year stint as the NRL’s head of football. Prior to that, he spent five years as CEO at the Canterbury Bulldogs.
