It’s day two of our quest to pick the best Wallabies team of the Super Rugby era, with the two second-row spots up for grabs today.
Yesterday we put the front-row up for discussion – and be sure to pick your props and hooker if you haven’t already – and now it’s time to pick the men who’ll lock the scrum behind them.
We have just a slight, niggling suspicion that World Cup-winning captain John Eales might sneak into the side in the second row, but he’s not the only top-quality player in contention here.
Fellow former captains James Horwill and Nathan Sharpe both enjoyed excellent careers in the gold jersey, Justin Harrison can lay claim to one of the most memorable individual moments by a Wallaby lock in recent memory, and David Giffin was an outstanding partner for Eales for years, including during the 1999 World Cup triumph.
Then there was the wonderful South African-born, 68-cap Wallaby Dan Vickerman, current veteran Rob Simmons, and Rory Arnold, who was one of the top locks in the world when he decided to leave Australian rugby at the end of last year.
And if there’s someone who we’ve erroneously left out of the options, you can always add your own – and complain vociferously about their absence in the comments section, in which case we’ll probably add him in anyway.
