Spanish team Sevilla has dominated the European competition in the new millennium.
The final between Sevilla and Inter Milan was a spectacular 3-2 match in which Romelu Lukaku went from hero to villain for the Italians and Diego Carlos went the opposite way.
The Belgian superstar converted a penalty just five minutes into the game after being fouled by the Brazilian defender. In a reversal of destiny it was Lukaku to deviate Diego Carlos’s shot to pass Samir Handanovic in the 74th minute and hand the win to the Andalusians.
Sevilla came back after Lukaku’s penalty thanks to a brace from Dutch striker Luuk de Jong. Diego Godin equalised for Inter in the 36th minute in a pyrotechnic first half.
The second stanza was less spectacular, both team suffering from fatigue. Opportunities were scarce and Inter wasn’t capable of coming back after Sevilla’s third score.
With this loss, Inter Milan failed all three goals of the season: the Nerazzurri came second on the ladder and lost the semi-final against eventual Coppa Italia winner Napoli.
Antonio Conte, once celebrated as the saviour of the club, may leave Inter Milan after just one year at the helm.
The former Juventus, Italy and Chelsea manager was visibly nervous during the game and came very close to a physical confrontation with Sevilla manager Julen Lopetegui.
After the loss Conte’s words left no doubt about his possible departure from the club.
“we’re going to meet on next week with the club and we’ll decide about my future,” he said. “I’m not sure that I’ll be the Inter manager on next season, we’ll decide together. Inter will plan the future with or without me.”
The relationship with owner Steven Zhan has been troublesome from the beginning and a consensual separation is highly probable.
On top of the list of possible candidates to one of the most prestigious managing position in Europe is Massimiliano Allegri.
Allegri left Juventus after five straight Serie A titles at the end of the 2018-19 season and was inactive in 2019-20. His past as AC Milan manager the only hurdle in the tribal Italian football landscape.
