NBA postpones three play-off games after boycotts

By News / Wire

The NBA has postponed all three of its Wednesday play-off games after the Milwaukee Bucks boycotted their match against Orlando Magic because of racial injustice.

There were earlier reports the Houston Rockets and Oklahoma City Thunder were also planning to boycott their game which was also scheduled to be played later on in the day.

“The NBA and the National Basketball Players Association today announced that in light of the Milwaukee Bucks’ decision to not take the floor today for Game 5 against the Orlando Magic, today’s three games – Bucks vs Magic, Houston Rockets vs Oklahoma City Thunder and Los Angeles Lakers vs Portland Trail Blazers – have been postponed.

“Game 5 of each series will be rescheduled,” the NBA announced late Wednesday afternoon.

Alex Lasry, the Bucks’ senior vice-president, said in a tweet. “Some things are bigger than basketball. The stand taken today by the players and org shows that we’re fed up,”

“Enough is enough. Change needs to happen. I’m incredibly proud of our guys and we stand 100 per cent behind our players ready to assist and bring about real change,” Lasry added.

Milwaukee’s action comes on the heels of the police shooting of Jacob Blake, a Black man, in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on Sunday.

There are some reports suggesting that he was going to the car to get a weapon. But even then there is no need to shoot someone 7 times. I can't ever think of a reason why a cop would need to shoot someone 7 times from just a few metres away.

The only “reason” I could think of was that they were worried he may be trying to grab a weapon from his vehicle. Crazy

I just cannot understand this latest shooting. The guy had not attacked anyone and was not threatening police in any way. But they tracked him with a gun, and then as he was getting in his car with his 3 kids, shot him in the back – 7 times. In Australia our cops just shot someone – but that guy had 2-3 knives, had just inflicted multiple knife wounds on someone else, was threatening police with the knives, and they tried the taser and it didn’t work. Clearly there are 2 problems, and the level of force used by police generally is one. With George Floyd, it’s hard to believe that would have happened if he was white. With this last one, wasn’t one of the police officers African American? And even harder to believe in the current climate of protests. What would have happened on both of them if no one had been videoing? We only have the police word?
