Wise words from retiring champion Gary Ablett have provided a calming influence for Geelong players experiencing AFL grand final week for the first time.

Ablett is one of seven players in the likely Cats line-up with previous appearances on the game’s biggest stage.

He and fellow veteran Harry Taylor have played in three each, while captain Joel Selwood has played in four.

But 15 Cats will play in their first grand final on Saturday night against Richmond.

In contrast, the Tigers are likely to go in with just one player – emerging star Noah Balta – who doesn’t have a premiership to his name.

“A few of us were at dinner and spoke to Gaz,” versatile Cat Mark Blicavs said.

“He just said to try and soak it up and enjoy it as much as you can, the build-up and everything, from media stuff to open training sessions and training with the guys.

“Obviously you want to bring your focus back to the game and giving a good four-quarter performance, but that’s been his advice after being in a (few).”

Geelong coach Chris Scott and assistant Nigel Lappin both played in multiple premierships with Brisbane, while fellow assistants Matthew Scarlett and Corey Enright were flag heroes with the Cats in their playing days.

“We’re very fortunate we’ve got players and coaches alike who have played in grand finals,” Blicavs said.

“We’ve got some good experience there and they’re passing on their advice to enjoy it, take it all in and stay calm as well and treat the game as normal.”

Blicavs, 29, is one of several Cats who had played in four losing preliminary finals before this season and is desperate to break through for a premiership.

“You play this game to try and win a grand final and win a flag,” the 178-gamer said.

“It’s a great achievement to reach a granny but we know the job’s not done yet.

“We’ll prepare really well and give ourselves the best opportunity for Saturday.”
