For the first time in history, the AFL grand final will be played outside Melbourne, and there will be a brand new start time for the decider between the Richmond Tigers and Geelong Cats.

While the grand final has always had an afternoon opening bounce in years gone past, the 2020 instalment will be a nighttime match for the first time in AFL history.

The AFL grand final will start 7:30pm (AEDT) on Saturday, October 24 at the Gabba in Brisbane.

That means a 6:30pm (AEST) start time for local viewers in Queensland, 7pm (ACDT) for Adelaide footy fans, 6pm (ACST) in the Northern Territory and a late afternoon, 4:30pm (AWST) for Western Australians.

Owing to this year’s quarter length being shortened from 20 to 16 minutes, halftime is expected to be at around 8:30pm (AEDT), while the game should conclude at approximately 9:45pm.

Both the Tigers and the Cats have had to recover from qualifying final defeats to make it to the decider, winning semi- and preliminary finals to set up a mouth-watering clash.

The Tigers pipped minor premiers Port Adelaide in a thriller at the Adelaide Oval, while the Cats did it easily against Brisbane to allow Gary Ablett Jr to finish his career on the biggest stage.

Unlike the rest of the AFL season, there is only one way to watch the grand final on TV, as Channel 7 hold exclusive live television rights for the game. While they will be streaming the game on 7plus, it will not be made available on the main website domain; only users with a Telstra TV, Samsung Tizen, Fetch TV, Apple TV, PlayStation 4 or Android TV device will be able to access this stream.

However, if you can’t make it to a TV for the big match, an AFL live pass subscription will enable you to watch the grand final on your device of choice. You can only sign up for this via the AFL app, available through the Apple App Store or Google Play.

You’ll also be able to follow every minute of the match at The Roar with our rolling live blog, scores, the latest highlights and all the pre and post-match analysis and opinion you need.
