All 60 games of the fast-tracked, North Queensland-based WNBL season will be shown live as part of the league’s broadcast deal reached on Friday.
The WNBL will return to the ABC after a five-year absence as part of a broadcast package that will see all 60 games this season shown live.
Two games each round will be shown on the national broadcaster, who ended a 36-year partnership in 2015, while four will be shown on Foxtel and the remainder on Foxtel’s streaming service Kayo – complete with commentary and multiple camera angles.
The season will defy the many COVID-19 hurdles to begin on November 11, with the final on December 20 and all games played in the Cairns, Townsville and Mackay as players remain in a northern Queensland hub.
A bulk of the Opals squad, including WNBA All-Star Liz Cambage and recently crowned WNBA champion Ezi Magbegor, will feature before the world No.2 side guns for Olympic gold in Tokyo next year.
Sydney will also host the World Cup in 2022.
Kayo’s Sheffield Shield broadcast has so far proved popular ahead of the Test summer and head of Basketball Australia’s women’s program Lauren Jackson said the return to the ABC would also help build their profiles ahead of both tournaments.
“The Australian Opals and our under-19 women’s team are both ranked world number two and this broadcast arrangement will enable all Australians to witness the skill, strength and athleticism of our players,” the former Opals great said.
“With all the opportunities that this season presents us, being able to broadcast all our games live across the nation was at the top of the list.
“This is a wonderful outcome for women’s basketball in Australia, and we are thankful for the support of both Foxtel and the ABC.”
WNBL broadcast deal
Fox Sports will broadcast four games per week (7pm AEDT Thursday, 5pm Saturday, 1pm Sunday and 3pm Sunday) on Foxtel and Kayo.
ABC will simulcast the 5pm Saturday and 3pm Sunday games on their primary channel and ABC iview.
Kayo will also stream all remaining games of the 2020 season.
