Andrew Tye has been called into Australia’s white-ball squad after paceman Kane Richardson opted to remain at home in Adelaide with his wife and newborn son.

Josh Philippe and D’Arcy Short will train with the national limited-overs squad from next week as Cricket Australia continues to rejig logistical plans in response to the COIVD-19 outbreak in Adelaide.

Richardson played all three Twenty20s on Australia’s tour of England before he withdrew from the Indian Premier League, wanting to ensure he didn’t miss the birth of his first child.

The 29-year-old skipped South Australia’s final game in the Sheffield Shield hub last week, when wife Nyki gave birth.

Richardson told selectors he was withdrawing from Australia’s squad on Tuesday, when players from across the country scrambled to fly to Sydney and link up for the white-ball camp.

“It was a difficult decision for Kane to make but one which has the complete support of the selectors and the entire playing squad,” chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns said.

“Kane wanted to remain in Adelaide with Nyki and their newborn son.

“We will always support our players and their families; even more so given the challenging environment we are in.

“We will miss what he brings to the team but completely understand and support his decision.”

Tye was part of Australia’s tour of England before he headed to Dubai for the IPL, where he played one game for Rajasthan Royals.

“AJ is incredibly skilled in both forms of the short game,” Hohns said.

“He impressed in the UK with his high work ethic and his positive energy around the squad.

“He is a great player to be able to call on.”

Short was part of Western Australia’s squad in the Shield hub, all of whom had been told to self isolate at home after returning to Perth from Adelaide.

The big-hitting Short boarded the same flight with uncapped allrounder Cameron Green, who also rushed to Sydney on Tuesday.
