Opinion
A couple of solid meetings were run on Wednesday, namely Gosford and Sandown, so here is a review of the two meetings and a horse or two to follow.
Coming winner
Pumbaa Rua was clearly the unlucky runner from race two. If he gets clear air earlier, he beats the raging odds on pop Free State. The stable are happy to travel for the right race, whether it be Taree/Port Macquarie or west like Orange/Bathurst. If they send him to one of those regions, he’ll win his maiden and more.
Amazing in defeat
It’s easy to pot the disappointing favourite Rejinsky, but how about Dawn Too Good’s run? He was first up and did an amazing job from the front. He ran a 600 metre section in under 32 seconds, which is speed that Nature Strip would be running. How he kicked on to run second, I do not know.
I’d love to see him have three or four weeks off to recover from that gutbuster and he can win second-up. You can also follow the winner Private Eye. Yes, the race was set up for him, but it was still impressive.
Not far away
I was surprised that Surjin was big odds yesterday and he just missed out on picking up the odds on the favourite Knight. They waited a bit too long to press the button, but perhaps he didn’t handle the home turn. He’s still relatively lowly rated. He could easily drop back to country grade and bolt up.
Sandown track
It started out as a Good 4, but after Race 2 it went to a Good 3. I’d say the track was nearly a Soft 5 before the first and as the day progressed, it got to a Good 4. On times, it was nowhere near a Good 3.
Smart
The jumpouts suggested Vandoula Lass was smart and boy wasn’t she. She was backed as if unbeatable and duly saluted like that. She put on speed and was under no real pressure from Williams until very late, so on raw times, she hasn’t stacked up against the other 1000 metre race but she could have gone much quicker. I think she can win a Stakes race for sure off this. It was outstanding.
Can keep winning
Tarns Prince was only second-up when winning on Wednesday. He was there to be beaten 200 metres out but found plenty and was edging clear on the line. He looks a progressive stayer and over the summer months he can keep winning as he rises steadily in grade. He can stretch out to 2400 metres, so the stable will have fun with him.
