India captain Virat Kohli has now made more Test runs at Adelaide Oval than any other venue in the world.

West Indies great Brian Lara named his first daughter Sydney, the place where he scored his cherished first Test century.

And no-one would begrudge Virat Kohli naming his first child Adelaide, if it’s a girl, as his love affair continued with the South Australian capital.

Kohli has now made more Test runs on Adelaide Oval than any other venue in the world.

Despite being run-out by his vice-captain, the Indian skipper’s Test batting average at Adelaide Oval now sits at 72.14.

Kohli made 74 on Thursday’s opening day of the first Test against Australia.

The Indian megastar is only playing the Adelaide Test before returning home for the birth of his first child, due in January.

His knock extended a stellar scoring streak in Adelaide.

In 2012, Kohli made 116 and 22 at Adelaide Oval; in 2014 he posted twin tons – 115 and 141 – before meagre returns of 3 and 35 in 2018.

Kohli’s 74 on Thursday was spliced by a dose of good fortune: on 16, he tried to steer a Nathan Lyon delivery to the leg-side.

The ball travelled through to wicketkeeper Tim Paine as Australia’s close-in fielders appealed, led by short-leg Matthew Wade.

Paine and Lyon joined in half-heartedly before the Australian captain declined to seek a video review, despite the urgings of Wade.

Hot-spot replays showed the ball leaving a slight mark on Kohli’s glove en route to Paine.

But his fortune disappeared when he was, in cricket terms, left for dead by his vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane in the final hour of play.

Rahane drove a Lyon delivery to Pat Cummins at mid-off and called yes, with Kohli rapidly responding.

The Indian captain was nearing halfway down the pitch when Rahane changed his mind, called no and abruptly stopped.

Kohli was stranded, run out by metres as Rahane looked to the heavens while his captain trudged off in disbelief.
