It might be New Year’s Eve on Thursday, but at Tabcorp Park Melton, it’s almost like Christmas Day part two, with 12 races set down, all of which are at Group 2 level. Here are the best bets for the monster program.

Tabcorp Park Melton

Best bet
Race 6 number 2, Idyllic

This shapes up to be an epic race between this guy and Major Moth. Idyllic is the one I like and am keen on. He should get a very comfortable lead with Chris Alford steering and this colt has got better as the season has gone on.

He spanked them when sitting outside the speed last week and from the front, even with Major Moth likely to apply the pressure a fair way out, Idyllic will be too good.

Best bet 2
Race 12 number 10 Sleepee

All things being equal, Keayang Livana likely wins, but because of the price gap between it and Sleepee, the latter is a better bet at around $5. There was a lot of arrogance and quality about her win at Shepparton from the front and her overall mile rate was significantly faster than the time Keayang Livana ran the same night. She’s great value in what is a two-horse race.

Next best
Race 3 number 10 Cover of Darkness

You don’t know how good they are until they are beaten. Cover of Darkness is yet to be beaten in eight career outings and has looked a star throughout. There was a lot of arrogance about his win here last time, leading and winning like it was pretty much a trial.

It’s a tricky draw, but he looks the next big star of the trotting ranks and only bad luck beats him.

(Place) Race 9 number 8 Malcolms Rhythm

If Lochinvar Art holds the lead, as expected, then this guy should hold leaders back and the $1.65+ available will be more like $1.05. He isn’t in the class of the horse he’ll trail – only one or two horses are – but he does draw to get the perfect sit and it could well be a peg dominated affair. Leaders back, he’s a good thing to run second or third.

Race five number two Starsbythebeach

Lacks the class of some of these, but she does draw well and I think $15+ each way for her is worthy of a ticket. She was very good last time out after doing work out wide with cover and surging hard to run second.

From the gate, she’ll be positive and if she can find the pegs first, then opt for cover behind Amelia Rose, she’ll run a big race.
