This is number two in the series and the challenge is the most simple on paper that we’ve done but somehow, one of the most strategic drafts we’ve got planned.

We’ve got Smithy’s Stars and Daz’s Devils on this occasion again but another is on the way with a third in the team. Due to 18 clubs for 18 positions, the bench are our favourite 2020 draftees and we can’t pick two from the same team. Daz keeps his bad luck going with getting the even picks so let’s get to it.

Pick 1 (Smithy): Nat Fyfe (Fremantle)

Pick 2 (Daz): Dustin Martin (Richmond)

Pick 3 (Smithy): Todd Goldstein (North Melbourne)

Pick 4 (Daz): Jeremy McGovern (West Coast)

Pick 5 (Smithy): Harris Andrews (Brisbane)

Pick 6 (Daz): Lachie Neale (Brisbane)

A word from the coaches

Smithy’s Stars
You may see the title and think “geez that sounds easy, stars all around” but this draft took some serious preparation and thinking throughout. I think I have come up with the better of the two teams though.

The backline has some elite ball use and run with an attacking brand guaranteed. Andrews and May are elite pillars to set up and the ball will be flying around. Whenever you can have Fyfe, Dangerfield and Steele in the same midfield, it’s elite. The balance of explosiveness and contested grunt is perfection and the ability to drift forward and kick goals is a huge plus.

I was able to plug T.Lynch in at full-forward very early and that was the steal of the draft for me, having the ability to know he was mine and set up my team around him made life a lot easier. Adding Charlie Dixon at CHF gives me two of the biggest and best tall forwards in the AFL. Good luck to opposition defences.

Jamarra Ugle-Hagan is the most exciting tall forward for mine and will grow with Aaron Naughton, Elijah Hollands does need to try and break into a very good Gold Coast midfield but is ultra-talented, Nix Cox is a genuine swingman but should join Zach Reid as Essendon’s new key defenders for the next decade post-Hurley and Hooker but the man at the Pies who could replace Jaidyn Stephenson in Cat Jack Henry’s brother Oliver could be something special.

Daz’s Devils
This draft board was the cleanest and simplest of the three we’ve done so far but my god, the strategy and planning with each pick was at times excruciating but it was fun.

Getting Pick 2 was a disadvantage as it was akin to bowling on the MCG circa 2017, just an absolute road so you’re on the back foot early. However, I’m extremely happy with my line-up actually. Conor Rozee returns like a bad smell but he’s a gun. Getting Zach Merrett was the pick of the draft for mine. No disrespect to Essendon, but they are lacking genuine A-grade talent across the board so to pick him up was a huge win for Daz.

A potential mistake I did make was I could’ve taken Ben King at Pick 22 due to Smithy taking Lukosius at 19 and could have had Patrick Cripps for Matt Rowell but I’m not too disappointed. McKay just kicked five and dominated Carlton’s intra-club and Rowell is a star already so I’m reasonably happy.
