When Brisbane coach Kevin Walters sits down to consider the candidates to be the Broncos’ NRL captain in 2021, Pat Carrigan hopes he doesn’t look too closely at last year’s results.

An injury to Alex Glenn before the start of the 2020 season thrust Carrigan into the captaincy after just 20 first-grade appearances.

The 23-year-old continued to fulfil the role during the year as Glenn battled for fitness throughout the campaign.

It wasn’t his fault but Carrigan’s captaincy coincided with the Broncos enduring their worst season in club history, picking up a first wooden spoon and suffering 17 defeats.

“I didn’t have much success last year so I don’t know what I should say,” Carrigan quipped when asked if he’d be putting his hand up for the captaincy.

“No, I’ve kind of said all along and been open in the process with everyone, I won’t change the way I play or how I act around the group.

“I’m just gonna be me and if it’s something that happens and that’s what Kevvie sees as best for the group, then that’s what I’ll roll with.”

Veteran Glenn is desperate to retain the role after his injury-marred first season as captain, and Carrigan says he’ll support the 32-year-old if he gets the nod.

As to whether he felt he’d been thrust into the role too early last season, Carrigan believes it can only prove beneficial to his career whether he continues as a leader or not.

“It probably came earlier than I thought but at the end of the day, I have no regrets of it and I gave it my best effort,” he said.

“It’s something that I’ve definitely learned from and grown from and whilst we had our tough times last year, I’m definitely better for it.

“Like I said, I won’t change the way I go about things regardless of if you’ve got a letter next to your name or not.”
