There are a couple of ripping meetings this Saturday night in Melton and Menangle, with Group 1 racing firmly on the agenda. Below are the best bets for the respective programs.

Melton

Best bet: Race 2, Number 1, Queen Elida
The market will be interesting but $2.20 or thereabouts is acceptable for this girl. This horse had the perfect sit in the qualifier and she was dominant on the line in winning. Chris Alford drives and has drawn the pole. She either leads or adopts an identical path to last start with a box-seat sit. Whatever the scenario, she’s the one to beat.

Next best: Race 4, Number 1, Watts Up Majestic
The price gap between this guy and Kyvalley Hotspur is far too great. That horse has had the barrier draw advantage in their recent battles and has duly saluted. The roles are reversed tonight and Watts Up Majestic has the inside advantage. This horse likely will get leaders back of the favourite, but if he was to dig in and hold the front, he’ll take a power of beating.

Value: Race 5, Number 1, Fear Not
It would be an all-time upset if she was to win, but $17 to place seems ridiculous. This horse had the back of the favourite Sleepee in the qualifier at Bendigo and stayed on quite well to run fourth. She’ll land in an identical spot, all things being equal. Gamblers don’t need to have much on to make it a result, and $17 is worth having something on.

Best bet: Race 4, Number 1, Crunch Time
He’s a great place bet at $3-plus. Forget he went around last weekend in the Chariots Of Fire. This horse drew wide and with the amount of gate speed drawn inside him, he had no chance. This horse was dragged back to last and stayed there in a sub-1.50 mile rate. This horse has drawn the pole. He should hold the back of King Of Swing and is a good thing to run top three.

Next best: Race 2, Number 1, Marty Major
Odds of $5 or thereabouts is a decent enough price for this guy, who does his best racing when in front, and that is the scenario he should get tonight. This horse had too much on them fresh at Tamworth before going to Newcastle, where he showed great early speed but was forced to sit parked and tired late. He should hold up from the pole and prove very hard to get past.

Value: Race 8, Number 2, Justa Little Bit
Patsbeachstorm looks like the winner but this guy at $5-plus to run top three is more than acceptable to have a speck. His form is inferior to most engaged, but the favourite should hold the lead quite comfortably from the pole. Justa Little Bit will likely have his back, three back at worse. He’s worth a place bet.
