Two meetings to focus on this Friday night, with Newcastle and Albion Park getting my attention. Down below, you’ll find my best bets for the respective programs.

Newcastle

Best bet: Race One Number 6 Miss Verstappen
Wow He’s A Rockstar has a good effort in a NSW Derby Heat next to his name, but this girl is pretty good in her own right and can beat him.

A strong winner at this track and distance last time out and with good gate speed, I suspect Robbie Morris will come out with intent. If she finds the front, she’s the one to beat.

Next best: Race Eight Number 8 Muscle Bart
Tricky draw for start one, but he looks a quality colt. On debut for the Morris team and comes here off the back of some sharp work at the trials at Menangle.

He has shown gate speed in the trials, so don’t think the barrier is too much of a negative, and if he runs up to the trials, he wins.

Value: Race Two Number 1 Its Allabout Alice
She has done a really good job since a stint in Queensland and she has a beautiful draw to use here. Likely to stalk the favourite, Guido Da Siena, she can land leaders back and be dangerous.

Recent efforts have been more than sound despite tricky draws, so double figures or thereabouts looks more than acceptable.

Albion Park

Best bet: Race Two Number 1 Scotch En Ice:
Looks a great bet, does this guy. You have to go back a little while to find the last time he drew a decent barrier, so gate one here tonight, it is all about him.

Matty Elkins has all the options in the world, whether to hold the lead or opt for a trail. Whatever the scenario, clearly the one to beat.

Next best: Race Four Number 1 Kiamasrosie
Jack Butler has this mare racing very well at the moment and I’m quite keen on her chances here. Sat parked last Friday here and she stuck on really well in defeat when a close-up third.

Drawn the pole, she has enough gate speed to hold the lead should they want it, or elect for cover and ping at them via the sprint lane.

Value: Race One Number 1 Our Bondi Beach
1×3 at double figures, don’t think you can go wrong.

He is getting on in years, but is racing pretty well at the moment, and the thing he does love is a cosy sit, so gate one is gold for him.

If he is able to hold leaders back behind a big gun in betting, he’ll only run well at decent odds.
