Former rugby league international Jarryd Hayne is facing a jail term after being found guilty of sexually assaulting a woman in New South Wales in 2018.

Hayne, who also had a stint in the National Football League playing American football, will be sentenced in May.

The former Parramatta Eel and Gold Coast Titan faces a maximum term of 14 years.

The two-time Dally M player of the year was found guilty of sexually assaulting the woman in her bedroom in her Newcastle home after the NRL grand final in 2018.

Hayne was granted bail on a payment of A$50,000 and has been released under a range of strict conditions, Reuters news agency reports.

Prosecutor Brian Costello argued before the court that the woman, who has not been named, formed a “conscious and definitive decision” not to consent when she realised Hayne had a taxi waiting outside.

Hayne won the Dally M medal on two occasions – in 2009 and 2014 – as the best player in the game.

He also represented New South Wales in the State of Origin as well as Australia in international rugby league, winning the 2013 Rugby League World Cup in England.
