There are two meetings to look at this Wednesday, with Melton and Bathurst getting my attention.

Below are the best bets for the respective programs.

Melton

Best bet: Race 5, Number 1, Better Exclusive
This is a tricky race, but he’s a great bet. He hasn’t really had much luck when it comes to barriers in recent runs, but this time around draws the pole, so he has enough gate speed to hold the front and from there, he’ll take some beating in what looks a winnable assignment.

Next best: Race 2, Number 1, Everybodyluvskenny
He’s let us down the past two, so I am hoping it is third time lucky this time around. This horse looked all over a winner last week at Maryborough but was nabbed near the peg in a close finish. He’s not the quickest from the stand, but is generally safe and is strong, so he’s a relatively safe option.

Value: Race 7, Number 1, River Patrol
Each way, you can’t go wrong. It has been a little while since he has greeted the judge first, but this horse draws well for this and possesses decent gate speed, so he can either lead or box seat at worst. Recent runs suggest he is nearing a win and overall, this race isn’t the strongest, so at odds, potentially 1×3, he is a bet.

Best bet: Multi (Race 1, Number 1; Race 2, Number 3; Race 3, Number 7; Race 4, Number 1)
Generally with these heat race meetings, it’s hard to find value, so the betting option is a multi. Joanna should win the first, Anntonia – the NSW Oaks winner – should win the second, and Soho Almasi trialled like a jet at Melton and should prove too slick. Jo Rocks looks to have the class edge in the fourth.

Next best: Race 5, Number 2, Obi One
His recent form is a bit on the patchy side, but with a significant driver upgrade and a positive draw, he clearly looks the one to beat. Forget he went around at Young last time. Back on the pegs and on that tight track, he had no chance. This horse has good gate speed, so should find the front and from there prove too good.

Value: Race 7, Number 9, Eagle Commander
Lyrical Genius will go around at a short quote, but Eagle Commander can win this. With luck, he wins at Young last start. This horse had no luck at a vital stage and clearly should have fought the finish out. He draws to follow Lyrical Genius and land the box seat. Off the last start, I’m keen on this guy running well.
